Newly installed hi-speed WIFI, with speeds of up to 100mbs, allow residents to access Planet Smart City’s app which enables users to access the latest news and activities in the area, check weather updates and air quality and alert friends or family if in an emergency. Whilst, optimised intelligent LED lighting systems consume less energy than traditional lamps.
Social innovations which help promote a circular economy were also introduced. For example, a newly installed object library and bookcrossing service allows locals to swap and share unwanted possessions. This helps to create a more socially inclusive environment, whilst also saving on valuable space within the home. The social innovations were underpinned by guidelines provided to residents which helped advise against throwing items away, helping to reduce energy consumption and save money.
To help reduce energy consumption outside of the home, Planet Smart City installed intelligent and automated irrigation systems that use sensors to regulate the amount of water used to hydrate the greenery in the area, overall helping to save up to 60% of the water previously used. The newly introduced urban garden helps to provide a tranquil environment for residents whilst serving as an area for learning and teaching residents on using vegetables in the kitchen. A smart gym based in the Quartiere uses kinetic energy to cleanly and renewably charge mobile devices such as smartphones without costing any natural resources.
